Depending on how recently you purchased your cell phone, you may be able to use one or more of 3 different types of ring tones. Check your cell phone manual to find out which of the ringer types your mobile phone supports. There are currently 3 major types of ringtone services available.

1. Monotones

These are the oldest type of ringtones. Generally they are simple melodies or sounds generated by the internal electronics of your cell phone. You cell phone has an on board synthesizer that generates these sounds. They are limited in the variety and quality of sounds they can produce. Monotones are usually found on older, less technically advanced cell phones.

2. Polytones

Polytones, also known as polyphonic ringtones, are currently the most popular ringtones available for download. Polyphonic ringtones are usually recorded using MIDI ( musical instrument digital interface ) recording. Polytones support the ability to play multiple sounds at the same time. This allows for much more complicated sounds and songs.

3. Realtones

Realtones are quickly becoming the fastest growing type of ringtone. They are usually part of the original song recording. Realtones are available from many top recording artists, tv, game and movie themes, as well as special effect sounds. The quality of realtone ringers is very similar to mp3 recordings.
